How CoffeeClick’s business model works
CoffeeClick B.V. provides coffee as a service. Instead of selling coffee machines, the company offers them, including coffee, maintenance, and service, through a subscription model. Customers receive high-quality coffee machines, sustainable coffee, and complete support, while CoffeeClick remains the owner of the equipment. This means they are responsible for repairs, reuse, and recycling of the machines and their components. This “as-a-service” approach encourages maximum lifespan, efficient maintenance, and circular value creation, a forward-thinking initiative co-developed by Klaas Knegt.
Measuring the cnvironmental impact of a cup of coffee
Together with our partners at Route Circulair, we have launched a new project at CoffeeClick: a life cycle assessment (LCA) to map the full environmental impact of their coffee service. Every stage, from the coffee bean and packaging to the machine leasing model and the maintenance CoffeeClick provides to customers, is carefully examined. CoffeeClick and Route Circulair have collaborated through Circulair West, the network that accelerates circular initiatives in North and South Holland.
Why this project matters?
Because CoffeeClick retains ownership of their machines, they can control how the equipment is maintained and adjusted, ensuring optimal performance. This approach significantly extends the lifespan of machines and allows components to be reused whenever possible. CoffeeClick also ensures that machines are properly recycled at the end of their lifecycle. As a result, not only is CO₂ emission reduced, but the use of scarce minerals and metals is minimized. During the assessment, several improvement opportunities were identified, showing how CoffeeClick can further reduce the environmental impact of their coffee service. Niels Knegt from CoffeeClick explained that they are eager to receive the results of the project to better provide customers with more sustainable coffee.
A smooth collaboration with measurable results
Our LCA expert Marijn Kansen reflected positively on the kick-off, noting that the process ran smoothly thanks to the CoffeeClick team. Almost all necessary data was collected in just one day, which Marijn says is a rare occurrence. The LCA provides insight into the environmental impact of an average cup of CoffeeClick coffee, examining the entire process—from beans and packaging to the leasing and maintenance structure of the machines. This gives a clear picture of CO₂ emissions and the use of materials such as metals and minerals, helping CoffeeClick understand where their circular approach is effective and where they can take additional steps to reduce impact. This ensures that CoffeeClick’s customers can continue to enjoy delicious coffee with minimal environmental burden.
