A comparative LCA study on various methods of the disposal of human bodies

The Challenge

Coöperatie DELA is the largest funeral care provider and insurer in the Netherlands. DELA wanted to assess and compare the environmental effects of existing and potentially future methods of funeral care.

The Approach

We determined the impact of various methods of body disposition using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
To communicate the results of an LCA study externally, an organization must, according to ISO 14044 and ISO 14071, organize a panel review. Hedgehog Company carried this out together with DELA and external experts.

The Results

DELA gained in-depth insight into the environmental impact of six different body disposition methods. For each method, we identified the environmental hotspots—areas with significant environmental impact. An LCA enables results to be communicated in a quantitative way, both internally and more broadly to the funeral industry.
