LCA critical review

As an LCA expert, you know that a well-executed life cycle assessment only truly makes an impact when it can be shared externally. And that requires an independent review. Hedgehog Company offers critical reviews, panel reviews and EPD verification for several EPD databases.

With our experience in hundreds of LCA studies and EPD processes, we know what it takes to ensure your work meets the highest standards.

LCA reviewing services

An LCA review is an external assessment of a completed LCA study. Depending on the purpose and type of LCA, different forms of review are applicable:

LCA critical review: an independent evaluation of an LCA in accordance with ISO 14071. This is mandatory when LCA results are communicated externally (e.g. in marketing materials or to clients).

LCA panel review: an extensive assessment by a panel of LCA experts, required for comparative LCAs that are shared externally. The panel evaluates the methodological choices, assumptions and transparency.

EPD verification: a specific assessment of an LCA that forms the basis of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This verification is required when publishing an EPD in databases such as the Dutch NMD, Environdec or IBU.

Our 3-step Approach

How our LCA review works

1

Scope

Together, we define what type of review is required (critical review, panel review or EPD verification), clarify the objectives and identify relevant standards and databases.

2

Organise

We take care of the planning, documentation checks, and — if applicable — the invitation and coordination of the expert review panel.

3

Execute

The review typically takes 1 to 3 months depending on availability and complexity. We ensure timely delivery, clear reporting and, if needed, support knowledge transfer to your team.

Who is this for?

We support LCA practitioners, sustainability professionals and organisations that need an independent review of their LCA work. Whether you're preparing to communicate LCA results externally, publish an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), or meet compliance or funding requirements — our services are designed to help you move forward with confidence.

Our clients range from experienced consultants seeking a second opinion, to in-house teams navigating the complexities of EPD systems. We understand the different roles involved in LCA processes and tailor our support to fit your expertise and workflow.

"When working with new materials, we encounter several challenges, with finding the right specifications being crucial. This includes aspects like quality and lifespan, as well as sustainability. By using an ex-ante LCA, we gained valuable insights that enable us to scale our product with minimal environmental impact."

Chris van Eldijk
Barista Company

"The events sector is a sector with a significant environmental impact. And Barista Company serves more than a million cups of coffee each year; just think how much coffee and ingredients are needed for that. And how much waste is generated. That's why we wanted to know what our impact is, so we can

"We have been monitoring scope 1 and 2 emissions for years. With the support of Hedgehog, we now also have insight into a large part of the scope 3 emissions. Thanks to a detailed report from Hedgehog, NO&B can develop its environmental policy."

Yes, a critical review is required if you intend to communicate your LCA results externally, in line with ISO 14071.

No, the reviewer must be independent from the LCA development process and not affiliated with your internal team.

The duration typically ranges from 1 to 3 months, depending on the availability of reviewers and project complexity.

A panel review is mandatory for comparative LCAs that are shared externally, to ensure impartiality and robustness.

Typically, a panel consists of 3 independent experts, including at least one with deep LCA methodological expertise. The other two are experts in the relevant economic sector.

The LCA commissioner must select an 'external independent expert'. This independent expert, in turn, coordinates the panel selection according to the ISO14044, ensuring independence, expertise, and relevance.

Verification is required to register an EPD in official databases such as the NMD, Environdec or IBU. It validates your LCA and ensures compliance with program rules.

And EPD is also known as the type III environmental product declaration. Without EPD verification and uploading your EPD in an EPD database, the term EPD cannot be used. Without verification, formally you speak of a type II environmental declaration.

A full EPD process typically includes: conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the product, documenting results in accordance with a Product Category Rule (PCR), carrying out an independent verification of the LCA, and registering the resulting EPD in an official database such as NMD, Environdec or IBU. It also involves quality checks, compliance with formatting rules, and coordination with the chosen programme operator.

Yes, most programme operators require verifiers to be approved or recognised under their specific schemes. This ensures consistency, transparency, and credibility in the verification process.
