The challenge
KLF Building Products is a Dutch manufacturer of Firetect® fire-resistant construction products. Firetect is tested and classified according to European construction regulations and is exported to more than 20 countries.
A lot of their clients are based in Scandinavia, and because of sustainability requests, KLF needs to provide several verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). In order to formulate these, we first conducted the LCA studies and following the EPDs.
Hedgehog Company has uploaded the EPDs on Environdec, the international EPD system for construction products. This is a program operator who formulates specific product category rules (PCR), leading to a standardised way of conducting the studies. This platform also facilitates the comparison of the EPD results.
The approach
We conducted LCA studies for nine different products. Starting with the data-collection on data about the products (raw materials, details about production, the amount & type of consumed energy etc.), the production processes, use and end of life.
And a step we had to take here was the third party verification of the EPDs, in order to submit them as a type III EPD.
The result
The EPDs enabled KLF to answer specific questions about the environmental impact of their products. By conducting an LCA study, KLF gained specific insight in their environmental hotspots during the production process. These hotspots are the aspects that contribute significantly to the total environmental impact.
