In short
- Of eleven competitor pricing pages attempted on 27 August 2026, three errored and were never read; of the eight reached, only EcoHedge published a number. Counting Hedgehog's own G2-listed price, two vendors total publish one.
- The visible entry point for a paid plan sits between GBP 990 and EUR 1,200 a year.
- For a genuinely small company with one site, a spreadsheet is still a defensible answer for the first year.
An SME buying carbon accounting software is choosing between about eight realistic products, a free official template and a spreadsheet. What separates them, on evidence you can check rather than claims you cannot, comes down to three things: whether they publish a price, whether there is a free tier to test with your own data, and how much public review evidence stands behind them. On 27 August 2026 we attempted eleven competitor pricing pages: three errored and were never read, and of the eight that loaded, only EcoHedge carried a number. Counting our own G2-listed price, two vendors in total publish one. This page sorts the field on those facts and names the situations where buying nothing is the right call.
We make one of the tools listed. It appears with its price, its review count and its weaknesses, the same as everything else here.
What counts as an SME tool, and what does not?
The category label is unhelpful, because half the products marketed at small companies are enterprise platforms with a smaller demo.
A tool is realistically buyable by an SME if it meets three conditions. You can see roughly what it costs without a procurement process. You can get to a first number without a paid onboarding engagement. And one person can run it as part of a job, not as the job.
That test removes most of the market immediately. Our census of 26 competitor domains, read on 27 August 2026, records that the large enterprise names in this category carry hundreds or thousands of G2 reviews and are built around multi-entity global operations. They are good products. They are not built for a 40 person company with one office and a customer questionnaire.
It also promotes two options that vendor comparison pages never list: the free official templates published for public procurement, and a spreadsheet. Our own census names both as real incumbents rather than as strawmen.
Which vendors publish enough for you to compare them?
| Vendor | Built for | Free tier | Published annual price | G2 on 27 August 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EcoHedge | UK SMEs | Yes, Lite | Yes, GBP 990 | Not listed |
| Hedgehog | EU and UK SMEs and mid-market | Yes | Yes, EUR 1,200 | 4.7 from 9 reviews |
| Seedling | UK SMEs, adviser included | Start for Free signup, no confirmed tier | No | 5.0 from 11 reviews |
| Persefoni | Enterprise, free tier available | Yes | No | 4.8 from 11 reviews |
| Coolset | EU mid-market, ESG breadth | No | No | 4.7 from 18 reviews |
| Greenly | EU and UK mid-market | No | No | 4.7 from 27 reviews |
| Normative | EU and UK | Not stated | No | Not listed |
| Ecologi | UK small business | Not stated | No | 4.8 from 10 reviews |
All figures read on 27 August 2026 from the named G2 profile, the vendor pricing page, or our internal competitor census. Ratings and prices move, so treat any row as a starting point rather than a citation.
Two patterns are worth naming. The visible entry point for a paid plan in this market runs from GBP 990 to EUR 1,200 per year, and everything else is negotiated. And review volume varies enormously: Greenly's 27 reviews are a better evidence base than our 9, and both are tiny next to the enterprise names that dominate search results.
Is a spreadsheet still a defensible answer?
For the first year, in a genuinely small business, yes.
If you have one site, one energy supplier, a handful of vehicles and a purchase ledger you understand, a spreadsheet built on a published factor set produces a legitimate scope 1 and 2 figure. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. The government templates published for public procurement give you a defensible format for free.
Three things break it, and they break it predictably.
The second year. Rebuilding the calculation from scratch produces a number that cannot be compared to last year's, which destroys most of the value of having done it.
The second requester. One customer wants your total. The next wants a breakdown by category, in their template. Reformatting by hand is where the hours go.
Scope 3. Once purchased goods and services enter the picture, the number of lines and factors passes the point where a spreadsheet stays auditable.
If none of those has happened yet, our carbon accounting from scratch guide will get you further than a procurement exercise.
What actually triggers the purchase?
Rarely a regulator. Almost always one of three things.
A customer questionnaire with a deadline. Larger customers collecting value chain data push requests down to their suppliers, and the request arrives with a return date on it.
A tender. Dutch public work runs on the CO2-Prestatieladder, UK public work on PPN 006. Both are prescribed documents, not general reports, and not every platform produces them.
A reporting standard you have chosen. VSME is the EU's voluntary reporting standard for non-listed SMEs, and the emissions disclosure is the part of it that needs a real calculation. We explain what it asks for in our guide to the VSME standard.
Identify which of the three you are in before you look at a single demo. It changes the shortlist more than company size does.
Which one should you pick?
Cheapest defensible route, UK. The published GBP 990 tier, or a free tier plus a template. Accounting integrations matter if your data is mostly transactions.
Cheapest defensible route, EU. A free account with published paid pricing, so finance can see the year two figure before you commit.
You want a person, not a product. A vendor that bundles an adviser is worth the quote-only pricing, because for a first inventory the advice usually outvalues the software.
Your obligation is broader than emissions. A full ESG platform, accepting that you are buying more product than you need this year.
You are in a tender. Ask every vendor for the output document itself before you buy. A dashboard is not a carbon reduction plan and it is not a ladder submission.
What are we bad at?
The Hedgehog platform guides you through GHG Protocol setup, inventory building, upload and reporting with an AI assistant, carries over 20,000 spend-based and activity-based factors plus your own supplier-specific data, handles multiple entities and sites, and produces GHG Protocol, PPN 006 and CO2-Prestatieladder outputs. Free account with no sales call, Pro from EUR 1,200 per year, rated 4.7 from 9 reviews on G2 on 27 August 2026.
Four things our own customers say we do not do well, all from our public G2 profile.
Data loading is manual. A small business reviewer said in August 2026 that once the data is in it works perfectly, and that getting it in is the challenging part.
Few integrations. A mid-market reviewer asked for more in June 2026.
No forecasting. A small business reviewer noted its absence in August 2026 and reported being told it is on the development list. If scenario modelling is central to your case, that is a gap today.
Not a broad ESG suite. A mid-market reviewer rated us 3.5 out of 5 in June 2026 and said the platform is less complete for wider ESG and CSRD reporting, with no data source management and no decarbonisation target monitoring.
How should you run the decision?
Give it two weeks, not two months. Open the free tiers of two vendors, load one real month of energy and fuel data into each, and see which one survives contact with your actual files. That test tells you more than any feature matrix, and it costs nothing.
Then ask each shortlisted vendor the same two questions in writing: what does year two cost, and what happens to last year's published figure when emission factors update. The answers are short, comparable, and rarely volunteered.
Our longer walkthrough of the selection is in choosing the right carbon accounting software as an SME, and if you would rather talk it through than read it, you can book a meeting.
