To stay connected with other organisations and developments in the field, Hedgehog Company is a partner in various network and knowledge platforms. Recently, we joined two additional initiatives; NEN, the Royal Dutch Standardization Institute, and ECO Platform.

What is NEN?

NEN, the Royal Dutch Standardization Institute, brings together stakeholders to make and record agreements in standards and guidelines through national and international standardization committees.

NEN operates through various committees and groups that monitor standardization trajectories. Hedgehog Company has joined one of these new standard committees; focused on climate reporting, the reporting and measuring of greenhouse gases, and sustainability claims.

Such a committee consists of experts who contribute from different perspectives. These are experts from the business community, as well as broader fields such as consultancy firms and knowledge institutions. Hedgehog Company has been approached for this committee due to its LCA expertise.

Rik Wessels: "The market is evolving; sustainability is becoming increasingly important and legislation on it is tightening. And customers are asking us for guidance; how can you sustainably and effectively improve? And make the right claims about it? LCAs are a good starting point for this; because you have specific and fact-based insights. It's interesting to play a role within this standard committee from this perspective."

ECO-Platform: Towards Reliable Product Data in Construction

ECO-Platform specifically targets the construction sector, aiming to provide reliable and verified product data for producing LCAs and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

In late May, colleagues Rik Wessels and Saro Campisano attended the annual meeting of ECO-Platform where, among other things, information was shared by the European Commission about the upcoming Construction Products Regulation, CPR.

Frequently asked questions

NEN, the Royal Dutch Standardization Institute, is important because it brings together stakeholders to create official standards and guidelines for topics such as climate reporting and sustainability claims. Through its committees, NEN gathers experts from business, consultancy, and knowledge institutions to establish clear agreements, helping companies report accurately and make credible claims about their sustainability efforts.

The ECO Platform is an initiative that helps the EU construction sector by aiming to provide reliable and verified product data. This data is essential for businesses that need to produce accurate Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), ensuring the information used is credible and standardized across the industry.

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) are considered a good starting point for making sustainability claims because they provide specific and fact-based insights into environmental impact. This data-driven approach allows a business to understand its impact accurately, which forms a credible basis for both internal improvements and external communication about its sustainability performance.

Construction businesses can get reliable product data for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) through initiatives such as the ECO Platform. This platform is specifically designed for the construction sector and aims to provide reliable and verified product data, which is essential for producing credible EPDs and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs).

The role of a standard committee in climate reporting is to bring together experts from different fields to create and document official agreements on standards and guidelines. These committees, such as those run by NEN, include specialists from the business community, consultancy firms, and knowledge institutions to ensure the resulting rules for sustainability claims are robust and well-rounded.
